Bourbon County, Kansas
LiteWave has developed and is continuing to expand its coal gas methane property in Bourbon County, Kansas. Currently, LiteWave has more than 3800 acres under lease in the area, known as the Cherokee Basin.
The Cherokee Basin is part of the Coal Bed Methane Zone that stretches through the southern US from southeastern Kansas into parts of southwestern Missouri and northeastern Oklahoma. The Basin’s coal bed seams have been mined for generations, and local players have long known of the area’s natural gas possibilities.
Industry analysts have noted that the coal bed methane play in southeastern Kansas has many things going for it, including a long history of coal gas production in the region, and, as a result, the area’s existing mining and gas infrastructure, including its connection and proximity to national gas markets.
In fact, according to the Kansas Geologic Survey, once in full production, the average coal bed methane well in southeastern Kansas can produce 60 million cubic feet of gas over a two-year period.
LiteWave saw potential in the area and engaged McGown Drilling to drill 5 initial exploratory wells on their lease in Bourbon County for the purposes of considering expanded commercial production and sale to market.
McGown Drilling had already had success drilling a number of wells successfully for local users in the Cherokee Basin. McGown Drilling has a long record of service in the oil and gas business in the region, and targeted drilling sites through extensive research of old county records to identify areas where farmers had previously drilled wells to supply energy for their farms.
Natural gas production has already started from the first 5 wells drilled on the Bourbon County site. Operational personnel report excellent results, with production stabilized at between 75,000 and 100,000 cubic feet of gas being produced a day, and excellent back-pressure on the lines.
A second group of five wells have been drilled, and are in the process of being connected to the gathering system. Five further wells have been completed and are expected be in operation thirty days after the second five are on-line.
A commitment has also been made to commence infill drilling on the property, with a drill rig being mobilized for a further ten well program. 20 further sites have been identified and are under consideration.
LiteWave built its own, proprietary gathering system to ensure efficient delivery of the gas to market. The wells are connected by an 11-mile pipeline directly to Bourbon County Pipeline L.L.C..
The success of the first wells has lead to LiteWave expanding lease holds in the area. LiteWave is planning to expand this project, and is in the process of doubling its land lease by acquiring another 4,000 acres within the immediate area.
